Bhagavad gita Quotes

"When I read the Bhagavad Gita and reflect about how God created this universe everything else seems so superfluous." Albert Einstein

“ In the morning I bathe my intellect in the stupendous and cosmogonal philosophy of the Gita in comparison with which our modern world and its literature seem puny and trivial ”. (Henry Thoreau)

“ I owed a magnificent day to The Bhagavad Gita. It was the first of books; as if it were an empire spoke to us, nothing small or unworthy, but (the) large serene consistent voice of an old intelligence which in another age and climate had pondered and thus disposed of the same questions which exercise us ”. (Ralph Waldo Emerson)

"When doubts haunt me, when disappointments stare me in the face, and I see not one ray of hope on the horizon, I turn to the Bhagavad Gita and find a verse to comfort me; and I immediately begin to smile in the midst of overwhelming sorrow. Those who meditate on the Gita will derive fresh joy and new meanings from it everyday." Mahatma Gandi

The exact quote from the Bhagavad-Gita is:

If the radiance of a thousand suns
Were to burst at once into the sky
That would be like the splendor of the Mighty one ...
I am become Death,
The shatterer of Worlds.

In case you may have missed this, PBS is airing locally this week at
9:00 PM:

America at a Crossroads is a major public television event premiering
on PBS in April 2007 that explores the challenges confronting the
post-9/11 world — including the war on terrorism; the conflicts in Iraq
and Afghanistan; the experience of American troops serving abroad; the

on America’s role overseas.

My Forbidden Face

What is the situation now in Afganistan? Are the women liberated? Listen to Malali Joya the bravest woman in Afganistan.

In My Forbidden Face, Latifa ends with the thoughts, "I pray God that whoever will lead our country may be, in his heart, as much Pashtun, as Tajik, as much Uzbek as Hazara…that our culture may be reborn from the ruins of our pillaged museums." Do you think that Latifa and Malali are similar in their views of what is going on?

Her last thoughts, "I'll do more than just pray. Because when the last talib has put away his black turban and I can be a free woman in a free Afghanistan, I will take up my life there once more and do my duty as a citizen, as a woman, and, I hope, as a mother."

Latifa and her family live in Paris. . . . .what do you think are her present thoughts on Afganistan? What happened to her family? Are they now back in Afganistan? If not will they every return?

Blogger's Rules

Hi Class,
We have been alerted through the English department to take a few precautions in our blog building:
1. Your full name should not be evident.
Some of you use your first name to identify your blog, "Jane's Page" and then your email address contains "jsmith@". So that you can figure out Jane Smith from your blog information. Change the name of your title page to something else "Writer's Corner", don't reveal your full name.
2. Do not put your picture up on the page. I said to introduce yourselves, but the English department does not want any pictures unless they are class pictures or images that are referenced.
3. If you post to your blog, music or videos. . make sure that they are free sites that offer the embedded html. So, music by Creedance is copywrited and therefore off limits. I got "Silent Night" by Boyz 11 Men off a free site and the Line Rider is uploaded from a free site on You Tube.
4. Images should have the URL or who gave access to the image. . . . Nasa. .earth. Soon, there will be a letter that you must take home to your parents to sign that lets gives you permission to blog and helps them understand what we are using it for as an extension to the classroom.
*Make sure that the content on your blog contains no objectionable content.
